Enhanced Rain Garden Installation in Bayport

Efficient and Eco-Friendly Solutions

At Environmental Landscape Management, we secured the low-bid contract this spring for a Washington County-designed rain garden in Bayport, MN.

Leveraging our advanced equipment, expert team, and efficient operators, we completed the project under budget and ahead of schedule, delighting the client and stakeholders.

The rain garden’s primary goal is to capture sediment and pollutants while maximizing water infiltration. This process allows soil to naturally filter contaminants before they reach the groundwater, preventing runoff from carrying pollutants into the nearby St. Croix River.

• We enhanced the original design for superior performance and durability:
  Sediment Trap Upgrade: Instead of loose 1×1 blocks, we used anchored natural stone for a taller, more stable barrier. Permeable clay pavers lined the bottom, ensuring the trap withstands heavy water flows and effectively captures sediment without displacement.
• Curb-Line Improvement:
  We replaced the proposed soil berm with fabric and rip rap by installing a stone wall along the curb, with a narrow rip rap strip in between. This keeps the rip rap clean and creates a stronger dam against water overflow.
• Access Enhancements:
  Stone steps were added leading to the sediment trap, replacing rip rap barriers, to simplify periodic cleanups for the City of Bayport.
• Planting Optimization:
  We planted 64 fox sedge plugs across the basin bottom—more than double the proposed 1-gallon potted plants—for faster coverage at a lower cost. This dense planting reduces weeds, prevents erosion, and promotes quick establishment. We also repurposed leftover Joe Pye weed, added blue flag iris, and seeded select wildflower species for added biodiversity, which the local church appreciated.
• Erosion Control:
  Biodegradable erosion blankets replaced mulch to prevent washout and maintain site integrity.
